Domestic violence charges are charges where the allegation is that someone caused physical harm to a spouse or a family member. It's one of the most common crimes that we see in municipal court and we represent people charges with domestic violence on a daily basis.
The most common type of domestic violence charges is an allegation where someone did physical harm to a family member, a spouse, a sibling or a child. In our jurisdiction, if the police answer a domestic violence call, someone is going to jail. In those cases, we respond immediately representing our clients.
In most first time domestic violence cases, the actual jail time is not really the issue; the conviction itself is because the conviction bars you from certain professions. It prevents you from ever being able to possess a firearm. You can't be a police officer. You can't enter into the military. And most importantly is a conviction for domestic violence stays on your record forever.
As a municipal court judge for three years, I saw hundreds, probably thousands of domestic violence cases and I know what that judge wants to see and what that judge wants to hear. My experience as a former judge serves me well in representing my clients in domestic violence cases.
